General Program Information

Application and Participation

  • Students can apply by completing the online application form available on our website. The application includes short questions about interests, goals, and availability.

  • Applications typically open in the spring prior to the summer program cycle. Exact dates will be posted on the website.

  • NeuroPioneers Pathway is designed to be accessible and low-cost, with priority given to expanding opportunities for students from underserved communities.

  • Students are selected through a holistic review process based on demonstrated interest, curiosity, and commitment to learning. We aim to build a diverse cohort of engaged and motivated students.

MENTORSHIP and learning ENVIRONment

  • Sessions are led by trained Duke University undergraduate facilitators and supported by educators and guest speakers with backgrounds in neuroscience, medicine, and public health.

  • Yes. Students regularly engage with mentors, guest speakers, and professionals across neuroscience, medicine, and global health through interactive sessions and discussions.

  • NeuroPioneers Pathway is a neuroscience education program designed to introduce middle and high school students to brain science, neurological health, and careers in medicine and research. The program combines interactive lessons, discussions, and hands-on learning activities to help students explore how the brain works and how neuroscience connects to real-world health challenges.

  • The program is designed for students in grades 7-12 who are interested in science, medicine, psychology, or neuroscience. No prior neuroscience experience is required.

  • NeuroPioneers Pathway operates as a hybrid program, combining virtual learning with select in-person programming in Durham, North Carolina, through community partnerships.

  • NeuroPioneers Pathway combines neuroscience education, mentorship, and real-world health applications into a structured learning experience designed specifically for early exposure to healthcare fields. Students gain both foundational knowledge and ongoing mentorship beyond the program.
